Beauty is more than skin deep
Did you know that we absorb almost 130 chemicals on a regular basis? Whether you have a simple or an elaborate beauty routine amidst body washes, lotions, moisturizers, creams, shaving gels, makeup, perfumes, etc, we end up using at least 5-10 different personal care products on our body every single day. But considering that besides protecting us from the elements, our skin acts like a sponge too, beauty it turns out is more than skin deep.
Now though the chemical content in the ingredients appear to be in small doses, the cumulative effect of repeated usage is questionable. No one knows for certain how each and every chemical affects us, or how they react in our bodies in combination. Some chemicals though have been proven to be harmful, such as Parabens, which come in different forms such isoparaben, methylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben. These are the most commonly used preservatives in cosmetics, but the danger is that they can mimic the hormone estrogen, which some studies show plays a role in the development breast cancer and urogenital abnormalities.
Phthalates, often found in artificial fragrances, are a class of hormone disruptors which can be linked to birth defects, sperm damage, and infertility. The usage of nanoparticles in bronzers, eye shadows, sunscreens are also hazardous as they are extremely minuscule and can be absorbed directly into the bloodstream.
The awareness of the harmful effects that chemicals can have on one’s body has made many people rethink their choices. People now choose to eat organic food because they want to avoid ingesting pesticide residues present in foods farmed in the conventional manner. They choose products that have organic ingredients that are grown without synthetic fertilizers or carcinogenic chemicals, which is healthier not only for the planet but healthier for their bodies too.
Unfortunately, while people are paying closer attention to what they ingest, they sometimes overlook the fact that 60% of what they slather on their skin may actually be absorbed into the bloodstream, and many of the ingredients in conventional health and beauty products are very toxic chemicals. This has to change!
If you’re already eating organically, then it’s time for you to take the plunge into natural beauty. Personal care products that are such an integral part of your daily routine should be chosen with care. Look for natural, organic skin care that do as much good on the inside as they do on the outside. Rather than focusing only on what ingredients they do use, what they don’t use could be the clincher – no parabens, additives, unnecessary chemicals or fillers.
Synthetic is so last season, it’s now time to Go Organic, to luxuriate in the goodness and purity of nature.
